In 1966, a group of independent auto insurance agents decided to pool their resources to form a Yellow pages advertising cooperative. The name that the group chose as their heading -- AAACO -- made it the first listing under the insurance section of the Yellow pages, and by advertising as a collective, all of the agents saved on advertising costs. Later, this group of agents met to discuss the California Automobile Assigned Risk Plan's intention to expand its coverage beyond basic liability. During its successful fight against C.A.A.R.P.'s proposed expansion, the group discovered that it had many issues in common, issues that other associations were ignoring.
The agents realized that there was truly strength in numbers and that they could accomplish much more as a united force than as individuals. Thus the American Agents Alliance was born. As the industry has changed, the Alliance has grown and adapted to become the Alliance of Insurance Agents & Brokers.
